CB&Q Brookfield Division Layout

Dick Wolter

This HO scale layout represents the Burlington Route in Illinois and Missouri in the early 1950's. Many are familiar with the "Q" mainline from Chicago to Denver, and the famous Denver Zephyr and California Zephyr that served that route. Not as well known is the secondary line that split from that major line at Galesburg, IL and headed southwest through Quincy, IL, Brookfield, MO and on to St. Joseph and Kansas City, MO. Having been raised in Quincy and St. Joseph, two major CB&Q towns, I was much more familiar with the trains of that part of the Q's network, and that is the part of the Burlington that I wanted to capture.

Crews consist of two persons, the conductor and engineer. Three road crews run through freights, local freights, passenger trains and branchline freights. Three yardmaster crews operate the facilities at Quincy, Brookfield and St. Joseph. I act as dispatcher.
Comments: The room has a vinyl tile floor and finished ceilings. I hung many 4' fluorescent work lights to provide plenty of light for the layout. All rolling stock and locomotives are weathered, including wheels and trucks. Kadee couplers and metal wheels have been installed on all cars, and all cars have been weighted to NMRA standards.
